Idiom of the Week: That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles

Meaning: Said in reaction to something disappointing happening – similar to “That’s life.” Also expressed as “That’s how the cookie crumbles.

Examples:

I waited in line for two hours to buy the new video game, but by the time I got inside the store, they were sold out. That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

He thought they were going to get married and spend the rest of their lives together. Last week, however, she left him for another man. That’s the way the cookie crumbles.

“I studied all night but I still got a bad grade on the test.” “That’s the way the cookie crumbles, dude.”

Pop Quiz:

You could say “That’s the way the cookie crumbles” to someone who…

A.  just got a new job.

B.  just got fired.

C.  just retired.

The correct answer is B. If someone just got fired, they would probably be pretty upset and disappointed, so saying “That’s the way the cookie crumbles” would be an appropriate – but not very sympathetic – response.   1. When I was not planning to work I got a lot of phone calls, when I am planning to get one they all disappear ,that’s the way cookie crumbles. I really don’t like it ,can I say I need to make new cookies?

  2. I went out all day. By the time I came home at 4:30. My husband and my friend told me .They both watched 63-4 , it showed “Free Turkey to give out” On Nov.21,2013 My friend gave me the phone number. It is 718-888-8747
    I called .Someone answered my phone. I said “do you have turkey to give out” He said how many people in your house? I told him .My husband and I.
    Those big turkey is for the “ORGANISATION”.
