March is #NationalReadingMonth & #WomensHistoryMonth. What has the greatest impact on a child’s future academic achievement? It’s NOT neighborhood or family income – it’s the mother’s reading level! We support over 200 women and mothers with adult ESOL classes every year. This past Sunday, our W1 students visited Castle Clinton and The Battery. They learned from the National Park Rangers about this historic fort and were able to put in practice their listening, reading, and comprehension skills. Next weekend, they will be writing an essay about this great experience. Going on field trips is a fun way to learn English! Our W1 students had the opportunity to explore the National Museum of the American Indian last weekend. Students were impressed with the large rotunda and took the time to read all the information about the history of the building. The gallery exhibitions offered them a great glimpse into the Native American experience. Thank you to our wonderful teacher Lynne, for organizing this trip! March is #WomensHistoryMonth! There are events all around the city this month to celebrate and recognize the work of inspirational women. Learning about the Three Branches of Government! Fewer than 4% of NYers who need English language #ESOL, basic ed, or #HSE have access to #AdultEdu classes. Invest $27.9m for Adult Literacy Education to stabilize, enhance, and expand programs. View our 1-pager https://t.ly/JVWQ #literacyliftsny 3.9 million New Yorkers with limited English proficiency or lack a high school diploma 🎓 need adult education. We call on @GovKathyHochul @AndreaSCousins and @CarlHeastie to invest $27.9 million in FY24 to support Adult Literacy Education (ALE) funding. NYS English language and adult education programs like ours are in danger of being cut by the latest budget proposal from our Governor. No cuts to serve our immigrants, #asylumseekers, newest arrivals trying to make a better life here in NY! #LiteracyLiftsNY Thank you @briankavanaghny 👏🏼 for meeting with us and listening to adult education students today! Education is critical to their success and families’ lives in NY. Invest $27.9 in ALE (Adult Literacy Education) funding. #LiteracyLiftsNY A friendly reminder to our daytime and evening students: No classes this week due to the mid-winter recess. We hope you stay warm and study throughout the break. Check back here for more opportunities to practice your English!
