Save for a rainy day

Meaning:  to keep something–usually money–for some future need.

Examples:

• My grandma has a lot of money under her bed. She says she is saving it for a rainy day.
• I lost my job, but I had put away money for a rainy day, so I was able to pay my bills until I found a new job.
• Smiles don’t have to be saved for a rainy day. It’s good to use them often.
