Idiom of the Week: Sleep On It

Meaning: To take some time before making a decision, usually overnight.

Examples:

I’m not sure if I want to accept the job or not. I told them I’d sleep on it.

You don’t have to give an answer right away. Sleep on it.

“Will you marry me?” “Let me sleep on it.”

Pop Quiz:

If someone says to you, “Let me sleep on it,” what’s an appropriate response?

A.  “Great!”

B.  “Drink some coffee – it will help you wake up!”

C.  “Okay – I’ll be waiting for your answer.”

The correct answer is C. If someone says they want to sleep on it, it means they need a little time to think about it and that they’ll give you their answer later.
