More Job Stories

Here’s another job story for you, this time from a Class 3P student. After reading to story, take the quiz to test your understanding:
Recollections of Impressive Jobs in China
Zu Jia Wang
A long time ago, I had three very impressive jobs in China that I still remember. Right now, I’d like to recollect them.
The first impressive job was working in the desert in Xinjiang for a summer. The weather was hot and dry. The water was poor and salty. By day, the temperature was high. You were very thirsty, and needed to drink a lot of water. But you didn’t have any sweat on your body because the sweat evaporated very quickly. The water was too salty and bitter to drink. In the desert, you couldn’t walk far from your tent, or you would be lost.
At night, the temperature dropped very low. One night, it happened to blow hard with sand, and broke our tents. Everybody had a lot of sand all over their bodies. Luckily, it was easy to be gotten rid of, because the sand was so dry.
The best time was nightfall. You felt comfortable and watched the sky, stars, and satellites.
The second impressive job was working on the Yangtze River from Shanghai to Chongqing, about 2,400 kilometers. Different from the last job, the water was rich and soft. We lived on a new ship and looked like tourists watching the scenery and cities on both sides of the river. One day, when the ship reached the point where the river and Dongting Lake meet, the wind, rain, and waves were so strong that the ship almost sank. Right now, I’m still afraid of it. We preferred to live on land more than on the river.
The third impressive job was working on a farm in Hubei province for a year and a half. I learned how to plough the field with an ox. At first, it was very difficult to learn. The land on the mountain was hard and sticky. The weather in the winter was cold and wet with a little rain. The ox walked very slowly and breathlessly. After I had learned to do it, we moved to the plains where the environment was better.
Those three jobs impressed me forever.

Job Stories

Classes 3A and 3P recently wrote about their current or past jobs. Read an example below from a Class 3A student and take the quiz afterwards to test your comprehension:
My Current Job
Cecilia Amaya
I am a home health aide. I work for Premier Home Health Care. I am a person who likes to help others. I enjoy spending my time with people who need my help. My patient is a nice person; every day he is waiting for me happy with a smile when he sees me. He just speaks Italian and English, so I try to practice my English with him. It’s funny because he corrects me every time I don’t pronounce a word correctly. His family is nice to me. I feel like one of their relatives.
I enjoy my job and enjoy practicing my English with my patient. But the first day I felt nervous because I didn’t know who my patient was. But days later, I felt better because he is a good guy. Some days we play bingo and sometimes he talks to me about his life. When he was a child he lived in Pennsylvania with his parents and eight siblings.
We also do exercise and watch TV shows and TV news in English. When he feels sad, we look at photos and he tells me about many trips he took in his life. He went on many cruises and went to many different countries. He was a person who did everything himself but now he needs help all the time because ten years ago he had a bad stroke. But day by day he tries to exercise, take medication, feel happy, enjoy time with his family, and be more optimistic about his life. God bless him and his family. I hope I can work a long time with him.

All Write!
Lai Yung Hui Wong wrote about the childhood magic of libraries. Yan Fang Li gave advice to new New Yorkers. Shu Dan Qiu‘s (above on the left) writing taught us how to choose a delicious crab to eat, and Xue Mei Lin (above on the right) shared her love of romance novels.
On Thursday, May 11, classes 2A and 2P traveled uptown to Symphony Space for a special performance. Actors read these students’ wonderful writing on stage to an audience of hundreds of people. 2A and 2P students enjoyed listening to stories by adult student writers from around the city – stories about crying babies, crowded trains, love, heartbreak, and much more. They were especially excited to hear their classmates’ writing read to such a big audience.
Every student received a booklet containing the selected writing.
All 2A and 2P students who submitted writing had their names printed in the booklet. Enjoy the students’ writing below:
Yan Fang Li
A New New Yorker
In my opinion, if you are a new New Yorker, in your first week, you have to find a hotel that is convenient for getting to shopping and the supermarket. It’s very important. Then go to a subway station to get a subway map and buy an unlimited weekly metro card. That way you can go anywhere quickly and save your money. After that you should search for an English class on Google or go to church. There the people are helpful, fun, and honest. You have to go to English class because students in English class are mostly from the same background as you and some students have been here for a long time. They have many experiences so they can help you with questions such as: How do you rent an apartment? How do you look for a job? How do you apply for healthcare? Where is a good restaurant? Also, you can make some friends in English class. I think classmates are friendly and very honest. If you have lived here for about one year, you can visit the tourist sites because by this time you should know which places are tourist sites. You should know a little about New York’s lifestyle and history. You can talk with people in simple English. So when you visit tourist sites you will be interested. In my opinion when you face a strange environment, you have to enrich yourself. That makes you less alone and makes you become strong!

Young and Healthy
I think I have a healthy lifestyle. I eat healthy food. I exercise. I don’t like to drink alcohol. I don’t like to smoke. I go to school from Monday to Thursday in the morning. After that I go to work. I always get home late. It looks really busy and sounds enriching. But it actually is boring. Whatever. I try to relax when I don’t have a customer. I like to read romance novels. When I am nervous I read. When I read I like to imagine. My day off is on Thursday. My children and I usually read before going to bed. My husband and my daughter asked me, why you like love stories? You are a grown woman. And I always say this keeps me young.

In My Childhood
When I was a little girl, I always wanted to visit a magical place. It was a large stone building. To my eyes, it looked just like a fairytale castle. People called it a library. It seemed like magic to me.
We went inside. It was filled with a lot of tables and chairs. People talked quietly and felt comfortable. Many books lined the walls. Mother told me books were like windows. She said, “Open a window, so that you can see many kinds of places and learn different kinds of things.”
I borrowed books after that day. I knew where I could find the best book on a shelf. If I wished to learn something special the book even told me, when I was reading, an answer.
As a child, every time I opened a book, it was like I opened a window to the world. As a teacher and a mother, books taught us. I hope you and your child will visit the magical place together. Your child will know the magic of reading.

A Life Skill
My mother-in-law usually cooks for my family and she is good at cooking. Most of the dishes she cooks taste really good, but I like the fried crab with ginger and green onion the best. It is a mouth-watering dish. She always tells me, “the key to this dish is how fresh the crab is and how meaty it is.” Actually I don’t really understand.
One day, my mother-in-law and I went shopping for food on 18th Avenue. We chose some vegetables and fish. When we were going to pay, I saw many lively crabs near the counter. “It’s a good time to ask her how to choose delicious crab,” I thought. She seemed to understand my question and walked towards the crabs. She picked two crabs and held them up. Then she asked me, “What’s the difference between these two crabs?”
“I have no idea,” I said. She turned the crabs over and pointed to the abdominal flap. “Male crab’s flap looks round, female crab’s flap looks like a triangle,” she said. “In fact, female crab tastes more delicious than male crab because it has more roe.” She said it again.
“Do you know when crab tastes the best in the whole year?” she asked me. “It’s so easy for me. I know this,” I thought. “Crab tastes the best in summer time,” I answered. “Not exactly. The best times to eat crab are in the first, fifth and ninth months of the lunar year. Crab is meatier and more delicious at that time,” she said.
Now, I know how to choose crab and I also have gained a life skill.
Literacy Review Volume 15
Another year has passed, and the NYU Gallatin Writing Program has released a new volume of the Literacy Review, which is a collection of writing from adult education students throughout New York City. Last week, one student from the Adult Literacy Program read her story at a special party to celebrate the new Literacy Review’s publication at NYU. Her name is Larysa Frankiv (pictured above), and she is in Professor June Foley‘s writing class here at University Settlement. Read her brief bio and her story below:
Larysa Frankiv was born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and raised in Lviv, Ukraine. She has a son, Vitaly. “1001 Letters” is about her husband, Lyubomyr, who died in an accident when they were both 26, and their son was not yet two. Larysa Frankiv studies at University Settlement’s advanced writing class, where Michael Hunter is the director of the Adult Literacy Program. She enjoys many sports, especially running.
1001 LETTERS
(TO MY HUSBAND, WHO DIED AT 26)
Larysa Frankiv
My Dear Lovely Friend,
I wrote you thousands of letters, and I will never stop. I have never sent them to you. I don’t know where you are. How are you? All the words in the world cannot explain what I want to say to you. I just want to tell you SORRY. Sorry for what? . . . I love you. I hate you. I miss you. Please give me one chance to see and feel you.
Who you are to me, I don’t know. However, I clearly see you every night; in my dreams, you are still with me. You are with me there, but you are so far away. I can’t reach you. I can’t hug and kiss you. I can’t tell you anything. I need you. I cannot breathe without you. I can’t live without you.
You know what? I hate you so much. You kill me every morning. When I wake up alone, I realize it was a nightmare again. I will be reborn one night. I will walk with you in my dream. I won’t ask you for anything. I will have this moment. You will be just mine.
Please don’t disappear. You are my soul and heart. If you disappear, I will disappear . . . Please come to me every night. I wait. I cannot live without you or with you. I am sorry. I couldn’t. I could. I cannot. I couldn’t. Forgive me . . .

Noelia Cardoso
The Scorpion
When I was ten years old, I was in my bed at midnight when I felt a bite. I started to cry a lot because it hurt. My mom came to me and asked what happened, and I said a scorpion stung me. Then she tried to find the scorpion. It was in my blanket.
My leg started to hurt. My mouth and my throat started itching and then I started to throw up. I continued crying and my dad said we had to go to the hospital immediately because I looked so bad. My father tried to find a car to take us to the hospital because it was so far away. I can remember it was so difficult for my father to find a car. Finally one neighbor wanted to do the favor and took us to the hospital.
In the middle of the ride I could not breathe. It was so difficult for me to breathe. It took more than ten minutes to arrive at the hospital. My mom tried to talk to me but I couldn’t speak. I think moms are so brave most of the time. We pass through many troubles in our lifetime.
Finally I needed six antibiotics because my body didn’t respond to the first antibiotics. My mom thought that day I was born again because I almost died that day.
In my town it’s normal to see scorpions everywhere, especially when the wind is strong. We have to take care in the house, especially in the bed. You don’t know if you can find a scorpion when you use the bed to take a nap. That’s why I love New York because we don’t have to worry about scorpions in the bed.
