Sushi restaurants are nearly as rampant as Starbucks stores. So why is raw fish okay to consume, while raw beef, pork and other land animals are typically not on the menu?

Meaning: For food, harsh-tasting (like coffee without cream or sugar); for people, angry and frustrated because of a bad experience.

Examples:

He’s still pretty bitter about the divorce.

I don’t think this fruit is ripe yet – it tastes bitter.

I don’t know why you’re so bitter – you’ve had an easy life compared to most people.

Meaning: Dangerous or likely to fail.

Examples:

He saves all his money because he thinks investing in the stock market is too risky.

You’ve got to be careful if you’re a parent of a teenager; they tend to try a lot of risky things.

It’s risky to stand too close to the edge of the platform – you might fall or somebody might even push you onto the tracks!
